Three Eras of Intelligence Framework
This month's framework shows the evolution of data analytics from 1990 to the present and beyond. It defines three major eras of intelligence and their dominant characteristics and success factors. We use this with clients to quickly pinpoint where they are today and where they'll end up after an engagement. It's a powerful tool that generates lots of great dialogue.

The framework also resonates with clients because it shows them what they need to do to master each stage. We have follow-on slides that evaluate their capabilities in each of the keys listed. You can show this chart to a CEO and they’ll immediately understand your mission as a data leader: to move the organization through each stage as quickly as possible.
The framework has evolved from its initial version, which I created in August, 2019 while preparing a presentation for a business-technical audience at a large insurance company. Initially, each era was separate and distinct, not a continuum. After receiving feedback, I changed the framework so each stage built on the previous one. Much better!
I’ve also iterated on the keys in each era. I've tried to find the five factors that spell the difference between success and failure in each stage. This is certainly subjective and you might want to tailor these factors to your own situation.
Frameworks for Data Leaders is a monthly newsletter that provides data leaders with visual tools to help solve a problem, educate a team, or communicate with executives. Our frameworks distill the knowledge and experience of our consulting and research experts working in client engagements. Rather than just show you the frameworks, we let subscribers download and use the frameworks, free of charge.
Feel free to use the linked Powerpoint file for professional work. All we ask is that you attribute the framework (or any derivatives) to Eckerson Group. And please share your experiences. We'd love to hear from you!
